How to Choose a Music Distributor in India

By Freqnc India Team · October 31, 2026

A music distributor delivers your songs to streaming platforms and collects the income they earn. On the surface, most services look alike. The differences show up later, in your fees, your payments and the help you get when something goes wrong. This guide shows you what to compare.

Understand the pricing model

Distributors usually charge in one of three ways. Some take a yearly subscription and let you upload many songs. Some charge per release. Others charge nothing upfront and keep a share of your income. None of these is automatically best. If you release often and have a steady audience, a subscription can make sense. If you are releasing your first song, a lower upfront cost might matter more.

Look for what happens when you stop paying. On some plans, your music can be removed if the subscription ends. Read this before you upload your whole catalogue.

Check the payout terms

A high minimum payout can keep small earnings locked in your account for a long time.

Compare the stores and extras

Check that the service reaches the platforms your audience uses. For Indian listeners, this may include JioSaavn, Gaana, Wynk, Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music. Also ask about Instagram and Facebook music libraries, YouTube Content ID, lyrics delivery and pre-release tools. Some extras cost more, so check the full price rather than the headline price.

Read the rights section

This is the most important part of the agreement. Find out whether the deal is exclusive, how long it lasts, and how you can leave. You should normally keep ownership of your masters unless you knowingly agreed otherwise. Be careful with any deal that offers money upfront in return for long-term rights. Have a lawyer read a contract you do not fully understand.

Test the support before you commit

Send a question before you sign up. Note how fast and how clearly they respond. Support matters when a song goes to the wrong artist profile, a store removes your track, or a payment fails. A cheap service with no reply can cost you far more than a slightly higher fee.

Our suggestion

Try to choose a service you can stay with for at least a few years. Moving distributors is possible, but it takes care. Pick clear terms over big promises, and keep your own records of every release. If you want to compare it with our service, see Freqnc India distribution.
